Special Collection to Care For Retired Sisters, Brothers, and Religious Order Priests

Parishes will hold the annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection on December 10 and 11.

Donations to the collection are distributed to religious communities, both those in the Diocese and those nationwide, to help with the needs of retired Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests.

Last year, parishioners in the Diocese donated $24,315 to the collection.

Historically, men and women religious served for little to no pay. Today, many religious communities lack sufficient retirement savings. Rising health-care costs compound the challenge to meet retirement expenses.

“The care of our aging religious presents an enormous financial responsibility,” said Sister Stephanie Still, executive director of the National Religious Retirement Office. “It is our privilege to care for those who gave a lifetime of tireless service.”
