The story began when 2-year-old Tara joined the Serino family as an adopted foster child, but the circumstances took a turn when Tara began dabbling in the occult.
The Serino Family, a devout Catholic family from St. Joseph the Worker Church in Orefield, did not always find themselves as devoted as they are now.
The Serino’s began fostering Tara when she was just 2 years old and then adopted her shortly after.
Tara remained a cherished and beloved part of her family, but struggles came when Tara began to experience mental health issues in her teen years. Amidst this conflict and without her family’s knowledge, Tara began to engage with the occult.
Multiple hospital stays led the family to feel hopeless at times, but nevertheless, they persisted in their love, prayers, and support for their daughter.
In her book, Cherished: The Amazing True Conversion Story of Tara Serino (As Told by Her Sister), Camille Serino Rebimbas, biological daughter of Fred (Fredrick) and Sandy (Sandra) Serino and older sister to Tara, details Tara’s life and eventual conversion back to Catholicism, just two and a half months before Tara was tragically murdered in 2017.
This local family navigated the highs and lows of this horrendous tragedy but, what ultimately preserved them and led them toward their faith and healing was the miraculous conversion of Tara just months before her death.
A few chapters into Cherished, Camille details how, after one of Tara’s hospital stays just months before Tara’s death, she asked Tara to join her in a consecration to Mary through the book 33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Marian Consecration by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC.
“Shortly after beginning the consecration book, the whole family begun to notice differences in [Tara]. Not the usual changes just for a day, but real differences,” explained Camille in the chapter titled “Conversion.”
Weeks into the consecration, Tara admitted to her partaking in Satanism, but that she was rejecting it. Within weeks of her death, Tara went as far as saying to her adoptive mother, “I would die for Jesus, Mom.”
In an interview with Camille, she recalls, “The last day with [Tara] was unbelievable.”
“We went to shopping at Wegmans,” and on the way back, “she talked about God the entire car ride.”
“There is a song by Ed Sheeran, called ‘Shape of You.’ I remember it coming on in the car and Tara turned the radio dial down, and said, ‘I’m sorry Camille, that song is not from God. I do not want to listen to it.’” Camille was surprised by Tara’s reaction.
Tara went on to say to her, “I am so sorry, you probably find me so annoying, but I can’t stop talking about God.”
“Her conversion was unbelievable,” Camille warmly proclaimed.
“It has changed my entire family’s spiritual life. We were always Catholic, but it is so much more real [after] watching… the things that happened to her during those two and a half months.”
“Once she made that decision and gave her ‘Yes’ to God, that was it. I believe He took her full speed ahead because He knew what was to come.”
