Gospel Reflection | Pentecost Sunday

Gospel Reading

On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Jn 20:19-23

Gospel Reflection

Praised be Jesus Christ!

The celebration of Pentecost affords us an opportunity to reflect more deeply on the gift of the Holy Spirit, a gift that can enliven our daily lives.

When Jesus Christ, the Son of God, ascended into heaven, He did not leave us orphans. Instead, He asked the Father to send the Holy Spirit to be with us and dwell within us each and every day. When we were baptized, the Holy Spirit became our most welcomed guest. At our Confirmation, we are sealed with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. Having received these Gifts, we can go out to the world and proclaim the Gospel as boldly as we hear the Apostles did in the First Reading.

Ever more each day, it is important to rely on the Holy Spirit with Whom we have been anointed and sealed. As we face the many decisions of life, turning to the Holy Spirit for guidance should be our first inclination.

Today, on this Pentecost Sunday, let us invite the Holy Spirit to be our daily Companion, and commit ourselves to using the seven powerful gifts that were fully given to us at our Confirmation.

As always, know of my prayers before Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament.
