Five Faith Friday

Here is this week's installment of "Five Faith Friday" which contains five, faith-based things I found interesting and am sharing on Friday.

What I Heard The President Say --
That, "I have been and continue to be a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade. I respect them - those who believe life begins at the moment of conception and all - I respect that. Don't agree, but I respect that" which goes against previous statements he has made that he did in fact believe that life begins at conception. Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington said that, “The President is not demonstrating Catholic teaching” and I would append that by saying he is also not following science which aligns with Catholic teaching that life begins at conception.

What Quote I Read --
"I find it remarkable that the trend at Church for the past several generations was to insist that how a person dresses, even when they are aiming their attention at their highest goods, is inconsequential. "Come as you are" is the mantra of the modern Church. How you present yourself has no bearing on the health of your mind/soul. The pandemic has reminded us, however; that we are material beings and so we've come to recognize that what we wear has a material effect on our health. The fact that the Church is so eager to mandate what we wear as a result of physical danger and declined to do so because of spiritual danger is a serious indictment of our priorities as people of faith." -Brian Holdsworth. How should you dress for Church? Do you want to hear the naked truth about dressing for Mass?

What I'm Monitoring --
The continued attacks on the Catholic Church. Since May 2020, US Bishops have reported 93 anti-Catholic attacks including arson, statues beheaded, limbs cut, smashed, and painted, gravestones defaced with swastikas and anti-Catholic language and American flags next to them burned. Last weekend, St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville, CO, was vandalized with pro-abortion graffiti. I've written about about persecution on the Church before (most recently on July 2nd and on July 16th) but unfortunately the mainstream media still does not cover it in their reporting. A question to ponder is whether they would still remain silent if the same types of attacks were being made against mosques or Jewish temples.

Which Article I Read --
A Catechesis on the Human Person and Gender Ideology by Most Rev. Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington. He sent out a letter that says in part, "Following thorough and robust consultation with experts in theology, bioethics, clinical counseling, civil and canonical law, as well as with priests throughout the Diocese, I am promulgating "A Catechesis on the Human Person and Gender Ideology." This document is both an educational resource for those seeking to learn more about what the Catholic Church teaches and why, and an evangelical document for those looking to teach the Faith and draw others to the truths bestowed upon us by God." The Theology on the Body by JP2 was fantastic but this is a condensed catechesis that everyone should read.

What I'm Re-Reading --
The Priests We Need to Save the Church by Kevin Wells. For those who know me personally, you know that I read a lot. So for me to re-read a book for the 3rd time in a year is saying a lot. The book is THAT good. Each time I read it there is something different that speaks to me or that stands out. The title can be deceptive to the lay individual but both clergy and laity alike need to read this book.
