Before entering the Seminary this year, Owen Fitzgerald put the finishing touches on a 3-month renovation of the outdoor Fatima Shrine at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus parish in Hellertown.
The service project was part of his work to attain the highest award of Boy Scouts, the rank of Eagle. Fitzgerald, 18, received his Eagle Scout Award at a recent Court of Honor.
The work included replacing a granite slab under a statue of the Blessed Mother, repairing the lights, power washing the shrine, and replacing some of the masonry. He led and coordinated the work, seeking expert assistance where needed.
“Scouting taught me a lot about working with other people and coming to a mutual understanding,” Fitzgerald says. “That is a good skill in any aspect of life, but particularly when embarking on the journey of studying to become a priest.”
Fitzgerald, a graduate of Notre Dame High School, is in his First College year at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary near Philadelphia. A resident of Hellertown, he began to hear the call to the Priesthood during his freshman year when he attended a “Come and See” weekend organized by the Diocese.
Others who received the Eagle Scout Rank on January 2, presented by Troop 311 Scoutmaster Steven Moser, were Vincent Dadlani, Declan Fitzgerald (Owen’s twin brother), Jacob Freeh, Peter Lega, and Brady Rowe.
