The following is a statement by The Most Reverend Alfred A. Schlert, Bishop of Allentown, regarding the Declaration Fiducia Supplicans – On the Pastoral Meaning of Blessings:
The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a Declaration entitled Fiducia Supplicans – On the Pastoral Meaning of Blessings. The document proposes ways in which persons in irregular situations, including same-sex relationships, may seek blessings from the Church. The Church’s teaching that marriage is between one man and one woman has not changed.
The Declaration has reaffirmed that the Church does not have the authority nor capability to bestow a liturgical blessing on irregular relationships, including same-sex relationships. Pastoral blessings may be imparted on any individual to invoke God’s help and mercy in their life, to help them grow in holiness, and to come to a greater understanding of Divine Truth. Such blessings are offered to the individual, and do not validate nor sanctify their union with another person.
The Church has always been a font of mercy and blessing for those who seek the Lord's consolation, protection, and grace in order to grow in holiness, and this Declaration affirms that.
