Bishop Schlert Asks Faithful to Observe Spring Ember Days

Bishop Schlert has asked all the clergy and laity of the Diocese of Allentown to observe the upcoming Ember Days that follow the recent Solemnity of Pentecost.

Corresponding to the four seasons, Ember Days are quarterly days of prayer, fasting, and abstinence in gratitude for the blessings and gifts of God, especially those related to nature and to human labor. The four sets of Ember Days always fall on a successive Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

The upcoming Ember days, Wednesday, May 31, Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3, are also special time to pray for our newly ordained transitional deacons and for our candidate to be ordained to the Priesthood on Saturday.

Fasting and abstinence would follow the current laws of the Church, with abstaining being from all meat, and fasting would be one full meal a day, with the allowance of two smaller meals that do not equal the main meal, and no eating between meals.
