Bishop Edward P. Cullen, Bishop Emeritus of Allentown, has written a new book titled “Our Eucharistic Lord: A Pathway to the Transformation of Our Soul.”
The reflection on being spiritually alive in the Holy Eucharist and Our Triune God will be issued Sunday, June 19, the Feast of Corpus Christi, during the Year of the Real Presence in the Diocese of Allentown.
“I believe that you will find within these pages meditations that speak to us simply and profoundly,” said Bishop of Allentown Alfred Schlert about Bishop Cullen’s new book.
“So often, we study the faith but are hampered in having it speak to our hearts. Bishop Cullen’s reflections help us to see how the elements of our faith can be used to deepen our spiritual life through prayer. He relies on the Holy Trinity, the Holy Eucharist, and the Blessed Mother as the pathway to divine intimacy.
“I would like to thank Bishop Cullen for continuing to be active in his episcopal ministry by offering each of us the benefit of his own contemplative prayer so that we can draw closer to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. May Mary, Mother of the Church, and Patroness of the Diocese of Allentown, who pondered these mysteries in her Immaculate Heart, teach us to do the same.”
Bishop Cullen was ordained a priest May 19, 1962 at the Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia by Cardinal John Krol, and this year observed the 60th anniversary of his Priesthood.
He was named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II April 24, 982. He served as Archdiocesan Vicar General and Vicar for Administration 1988-98 and was consecrated a Bishop, as Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, April 14, 1994.
Bishop Cullen was installed as the Third Bishop of Allentown Feb. 9, 1998 at the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena, Allentown by Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. His motto “Christ, Church, Compassion” reflected his spiritual and prayerful life.
Having served as Bishop beyond his 75th birthday, the Holy Father accepted his resignation on May 27, 2009.
Among his previous pastoral letters and books, he wrote “Lord God Holy Spirit, Sanctifier: A Reflection on the Holy Spirit Alive Within Us” in 2017, along with a companion piece, “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”
