Annual Reading of Declaration of Independence to Help Celebrate Nation’s Birthday at Historic Allentown Church

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another …”

The Declaration of Independence, ratified by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subject to British rule.

The Declaration’s memorable words are read every year at the historic Allentown church where the Liberty Bell was hidden during the Revolutionary War.

This year, Bishop Alfred Schlert and other community leaders will be the guest readers, remotely, as the Zion’s “Liberty Bell” UCC Church celebrates Independence Day at its online Sunday service July 5.

Bishop Schlert was selected to read the opening paragraph of the Declaration, and another paragraph later in the document. Among the 23 other readers are elected officials, community advocates, educators, economic development leaders, and law enforcement officials.

It’s a star-spangled show of unity to help celebrate the birthday of our nation. For more details on the service, visit the church’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LibertyBellChurch/
